Bali a great place to learn how to surf

Surfing is an extremely fun water sport. I was sitting on the beach watching the surfers before going for my first lesson and wondered; Can the waves really hurt me? What about crashing into the ocean bottom? Is the surf board itself a danger? Are all the other humans in the water a hazard? These were just a couple of things I was aware of before getting into the water.
